The project ‘City Comparisons’ is divided into series of photographs of various places to examine differences and similarities in

architecture and ambience. Taken between 2024 and 2025, the photographs represent places visited by the photographer

Dr Robert Organ.  Series are made for the following places:

Istanbul.  Istanbul is a major religious centre and large city in Turkey.  Places photographed include the famous Blue Mosque,

HagiaSophia (a huge Christian church before it was converted into a mosque), the Grand Bazaar, the Sultan’s Palace (Topkapi

Palace) and the fascinating underground waterways of the Basilica Cistern.  Buildings along the Bosphorus are also shown

along with other city monuments and the contemporary gallery, Istanbul Modern.

Valencia.  Valencia is a large Spanish City and comprises three diverse districts: the Old Town, the ultra-modern City of Arts and

Sciences, and the beach and port area.  In the Old Town, the famous Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, the exterior of the National

Museum of Ceramics and Sanctuary Arts, and the Central Market were photographed.  In the City of Arts and Sciences, the

Oceanogràfic (Europe's largest aquarium), the Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe (science museum), the Hemisfèric

(planetarium), the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (opera house), and the Àgora (multifunctional space) were photographed.

Paris.  The capital city of France needs little introduction.  Photographs of the newly restored Notre Damme cathedral, the

Louvre,Versailles palace, the town Hall, the Pompidou Centre, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, St. Denis Basilica, Montmartre,

the interior of the Galeries Lafayette shop, the Sacre Coeur church, the Seine River, the Orsay Museum and of course the

symbol of Paris, the Eifel Tower, are all shown.

Nara.  In contrast to the three European cities above with their use of brick, stone, metal or glass, Nara (once the old Capital of

Japan) comprises many wooden buildings in its historic centre which is enclosed in a huge park.  Hundreds of friendly deer

(said to encompass the spirits of deceased Buddhist priests) roam the park which makes for a unique experience.  Also, within

the park is the prestigious Todaiji Temple with its 15m high Buddha.  All of these features were captured.

Other places.  This series contains a few photographs of London, Windsor, the buildings at the National Botanic Garden of

Wales, stately homes across the UK and Tokyo

All the photographs were taken with digital cameras.
